Working with the Computer Domain/Workgroup Membership Manager

The Domain/Workgroup Membership Manager allows you to join a remote computer to an Active Directory domain or workgroup and query the computer’s domain/workgroup membership. It also allows renaming of remote computers.

To join a computer to a domain

Perform the following steps to join a computer to an Active Directory domain.

  1. Select the "Join computer to a domain" task.
  2. Enter the domain name you want to join the computerto in the "Domain name" field.
  3. You can also specify the "organizational unit" you want the computer object entry to be a member in.
  4. Select if you want to restart the computer after joining it to the domain.
  5. You may also rename the computer you are about to join to the domain. Rename rules must be entered via the Rename tab (10). See the Renaming a Computer section for details.
  6. Add the computers your want to joint to a domain to the Target Computers list.
  7. Enter administrative logon credentials for the target computer into the space provided (8).
  8. Enter administrative logon credentials for the domain controller into the space provided (9).
  9. Click the Execute button.

To join a computer to a workgroup

Perform the following tasks to join a computer to a Windows workgroup.

  1. Select "Join computer to a domain" task.
  2. Enter the workgroup name you want the computer to join into the "Workgroup name" field.
  3. Specify if you want to restart the computer after joining it to a domain.
  4. Optionally, you can rename the computer before you join it to a workgroup. The Rename rules must be entered via the Rename tab (10). See the Renaming a Computer section.
  5. Add the names of the computers your want to joint to the workgroup to the Target Computers list.
  6. Enter administrative logon credentials for the target computer into the spaces provided (8).
  7. Click the Execute button.

Removing computer from domain/workgroup

Perform the following steps to remove a computer from a domain or workgroup.

  1. Select "Remove computers from domain/workgroup" task.
  2. Specify if you want to restart the computer after it is removed from the domain/workgroup.
  3. Add the names of the computers your want to be removed from the domain/workgroup to the Target Computers list.
  4. Enter administrative logon credentials for the target computer into the spaces provided (8).
  5. Enter administrative logon credentials for the domain controller into the spaces provided (9).
  6. Click the Execute button.

Renaming a Computer

Perform the following steps to rename a remote computer. It can be executed as a standalone task (4) or as an optional step during join domain/workgroup tasks.

Renaming rules can be entered via the Rename tab. Enter a new computer name in to the "New computer name" (1) field. The static part of the name can be entered in the New Computer Name textbox. In the dropdown list (2) next to the New Computer Name textbox, you can specify the serialized format.

Format Notation Description
Sequence Number ($NUM) A number sequence beginning with the number specified in the "First sequence number" box, including zero (0). The number may be formatted to a fixed length by specifying the "Pad sequence number with zeroes" in its value box.
Sequence letter (UPPERCASE) ($LTR) An uppercase letter sequence beginning with "A".
Sequence letter (lowercase) ($ltr) An lowercase letter sequence beginning with "a".
 

For example, by specifying a computer name such as Accounting($NUM), with a starting value of one and a padding of three, the following sequence is created: Accounting001, Accounting002, … Accounting251, …

Querying Computer Domain/Workgroup Membership

Perform the following steps to query a computer’s current domain/workgroup membership.

  1. Add the names of the computers your want to query to the Target Computers list.
  2. Enter administrative logon credentials for the target computer into the spaces provides (8).
  3. Click the Query Current Membership button (7).
  4. The results will be displayed in the target computers list "Status" column.
